Ingrown Hair

Ingrown hair is a condition where the hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin, and most commonly appears in areas that are shaved or waxed.  The ingrown hair condition is generally observed in those who have curly or thick hair.  Ingrown hairs that become infected and inflamed (folliculitis) can cause a moderate amount of discomfort and in some cases lead to scarring, especially if the ingrown hair has been difficult to extract. 

Anything that causes the hair to be broken off short with a sharp edge can contribute to the formation of ingrown hairs.  Shaving is the leading cause, followed by waxing and tight clothing.  Laser hair removal provides very effective results in reducing and removing ingrown hairs with the added bonus of reducing hair growth.  Laser is able to disable the growth of the ingrown hair without damaging the surrounding tissue, eliminating unnecessary scarring.
