Facial Capillaries
Facial capillaries or broken/dilated capillaries are characterised as red thread like lines located most commonly on the nose, cheeks, chin and to a lesser extent on the decolletage. Dilated capillaries can be prominent and singular as seen in the nostril area, or diffuse, where multiple smaller capillaries give a red or flushed appearance to the skin.
Dilated capillaries can occur due to a number of reasons such as genetic disposition, excessive sun exposure, pregnancy or other hormonal changes, temperature extremes, and frequent pressure or friction i.e. wearing glasses. A dilated capillary has lost the elasticity of it’s capillary wall and the ability to circulate and pump blood through it’s passage. As a result blood will tend to accumulate within the passage and become visible at the skin’s surface.
